Record of Executing Athletes

The letter noted that the athlete's case was not unique and highlighted Iran’s record of executing athletes for their convictions, including a national team leader, leader of the soccer squad, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the women's volleyball squad. In two thousand twenty, a wrestling champion, a 27-year-old national wrestling champion, was also executed.

Additional signatories to the statement consist of Tracy Edwards, who skippered the first women's squad in a international sailing event and was the pioneering lady to earn a renowned nautical honor; the ex- captain of the soccer side a sports advocate; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the Iranian squad for the 1978 World Cup.

Death Penalty Surge
